STRAWBERRIES are finished for the 2022 Spring Season!  They should be back by the end of April 2023!

Braehead Farm grows 5 different varieties of strawberries year.  They all taste different!  The first and early strawberries are called Sweet Charlies.  Other varieties are Camarosa, Ruby June, Chandler, and Flavor Fest!

*Before going to pick, please check in with the market for field directions and to get a “busket” (basket/bucket!) or bring your busket from last year!

**We offer our pre-weighed 4 quart “Busket” for a $1.00 (it will hold about 5 pounds mounded).  We  encourage you to wash and store your berries in it.  You can bring it back for any PYO!   Our buskets are preweighed so that the weight of the containers are taken off of the berry weight/price.

*Make sure when you pick:

Strawberries – all red

Raspberries – deep red not light pink

Blueberries – all blue, no purple

Blackberries – all black, no purple

Berries DO NOT continue to ripen after being picked.     After picking, bring in your berries to the market for weighing and paying.  The berries are weighed and sold by the pound.   Please bring in and weigh/pay for your berries before eating since we sell them by the pound.

Do not wash your berries until you are ready to eat them!  Keep them cool after picking or they will degenerate quickly!  We recommend not to pick right after a heavy rain.  Berries need SUN to be sweet!

Pick Your Own rules:

When you arrive, if you are picking berries May-July get a pre-weighed/tare BUCKET FROM THE MARKET to take to the fields to pick in.  These buckets are $1.00 each to be paid when you purchase your berries. The cashier will NOT touch your bucket after you have picked.  You must place and pickup your own bucket off of the scales. If you bring a different bucket than the one provided by Braehead Farm, we cannot take the weight of the bucket off of the berry total weight.

¨ Once YOU pick the berries (or other produce) they are YOURS to PURCHASE in the market or outside payment tent.

¨ ABSOLUTELY NO EATING IN THE FIELDS, per the Virginia Department of Agriculture.

¨ No pets in the produce patches, and no row jumping/walking across the plants.  Stay in your picking rows.  Keep children with you at all times.

THERE IS NEVER AN ADMISSION TO THE PICK-YOUR-OWN FIELDS, you just pay for what you pick. All produce is sold by-the-pound.  (The only admission area is The Family Playgrounds where the farm animals are, additional picnic areas, hay barn, play equipment, event barns. This area is $5.00 plus tax, per person, age 2 and under free)

FYI: PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED, BY LAW, IN THE FRONT PICK-YOUR-OWN produce patches.  They must stay on the grassy areas.   You are welcome to bring your dog on a leash and pick up after them, in the other areas of our farm.  We prefer the dog NOT come into the market if the market is busy and full of customers. We would be glad to assist you to walk around the market to the Family Playgrounds. And remember, we have free range chickens!
